(WENN) - Former U.S. leader President George H.W. Bush has died, aged 94.
Bush, the father of President George W. Bush, died Friday night after a long illness.
His son confirmed the sad news in a statement that reads: "Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro, and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died.
"George H. W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."
Bush was elected America's 41st President in 1988 and served until 1993.
His death comes less than eight months after his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, died.
A Yale University graduate and World War Two hero, Bush served two terms as a Texas congressman before he became chairman of the Republican National Committee, the U.S. envoy to China, and director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He also served as vice president under Ronald Reagan, before becoming his successor.
